{Vaughan Family)

The Vaughan Family in Wales and America is a 2009 update of a family history first published in 1990 by Higginson Book Company of Salem, Massachusetts. Originally conceived as a "search for the Welsh ancestors of William Vaughan (1750-1840)," this book became a global search for Vaughans of all seasons. Revised in 1992, this edition has been further revised by the author, 86 year-old James E. Vaughan, for publication and distribution by Trafford Publishing of 1663 Liberty Drive, Bloomington IN 47503, the publisher of his historical novels The Alchymist and The Silurist, and Diana and Leo. The Alchymist and The Silurist, a historical novel, is based on the lives of 17th-century Welsh twins Thomas and Henry Vaughan. Members of a family with a tradition of strong Loyalist ties, the twins interrupted their studies at Oxford to join their Cousin Colonel Herbert Price during the Parliamentarian and Puritan uprising. Henry then took up work as a physician, while Thomas, now a defrocked Anglican minister, intensified his study of alchemy, and sought the key to the fabled philosopher's stone in the king's laboratory at Whitehall in London. The attention of the author was first drawn to his distant kinsmen while browsing in Robert Vaughan's antiquarian bookshop in Stratford in 1990. Click here.

Stories of the controversial alchymist Thomas Vaughan were revived some two hundred years after his death by a roguish French writer named Gabrielle Jogand-Pages, who created elaborate hoaxes, pitting Freemasons against Catholics. Writing under various pseudonyms, he published a series of salacious stories about a young American girl named Diana Vaughan, who had journeyed to Paris hoping to prove her kinship to the 17th-century Welsh scientist. This book, Diana and Leo, the sequel to The Alchymist and The Silurist, is now available from the publisher, Trafford Publishing, or on-line at Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.. {Bankmules)

Our e-Lynks webmaster, James E. Vaughan, grew up in Van Lear, a company-built coal town in eastern Kentucky. In his eyes, Van Lear was unique, a great place to "grow up in" despite The Great Depression and occasional human tragedy. Van Lear's athletic teams were nicknamed BANKMULES, the title of one of Vaughan's books, which KENTUCKY MONTHLY described as "a gem of a memoir." One Kentucky reader characterized it as a "beautiful book of unusual perfection." The Hardin County Kentucky News-Enterprise referred to it as "an uplifting book." If you wish to learn more about BANKMULES from the publisher (The Jesse Stuart Foundation), click here.

The Internet: Who did what? Confused about who did what and when? Fortune Magazine's "A Brief History of the Net" gives us the following info: J. C. R. Licklider, Leonard Kleinrock, and Lawrence Roberts of MIT (not Al Gore, unless his 1993 endorsement of Clipper encryption counts as "invention of the Internet") were cited as originators of the Internet; a Chicago hobbyist named Ward Christensen wrote the first MODEM program; William Gibson introduced the term "Cyberspace"; "The World" in Brookline, Mass is said to have been the first ISP; Tim Berners-Lee of CERN, Geneva, Switzerland developed HTML and named his project the World Wide Web; and Marc Andreessen's MOSAIC browser provided the first easy navigation of the Web. And you thought you knew all of this!

Internet Concerns:
It is entirely possible that website content could be affected as civil libertarians edge ever closer to indiscriminate use of "Free Speech" to suit their own selfish agendas. At the other extreme are those who would act as Internet Police. The actions of both of these extremist groups could be the ultimate cause of regulation and loss of personal freedom for all of us. Efforts like ours to provide what we regard as a useful public service could be affected.

How not to get hacked:
Bill Joy, chief scientist for Sun Microsystems, once listed ten things we can do to "keep from getting hacked." His suggestions are still valid. He suggests using and updating virus software often, not allowing online people to store your credit card information, using and changing your online passwords often, using different passwords for different websites, using latest versions of web browsers and software, revealing credit card numbers only to secure sites, making certain you know the site you're dealing with (check spelling etc), using a security program that gives you control over all cookies that are accessible to websites, installing firewall software if you use open lines, and making certain that you know the origin of incoming e-mail before opening any attachments. The regular use of spyware removal software like ad-aware is also highly advisable to maintain PC content security and integrity. Click here.

Internet Security:
Microsoft is continuing an extensive research and development effort code-named Palladium, to drastically alter the whole world of Internet and PC security. The ambitious new program envisions security and privacy functions that would be etched onto PC chips, creating what MS project manager Mario Juarez sees as a virtual "security vault" in which encrypted information would be available only to those programs, websites, and people that the computer recognizes as "authorized." Founder Bill Gates has given highest priority to making MS products secure. The Palladium project is expected to require several years for full development and implementation.

DOT.NET:
Microsoft regards its .Net (dot.net) as another improvement in web usage. Based on a programming language called XML (eXtensible Markup Language), .net programs will bridge the gaps between a variety of devices, making them more accessible and useful, one to the other. Microsoft .NET was first introduced as "a revolutionary new platform with tools and services that fully exploit both computing and communications."

Setting up an Intranet or LAN:
Do you communicate wirelessly? Chances are you are using a wireless technology known as 802.11b or Wi-Fi. It offers an open-standard way to connect laptops and local area networks (LANs) by transmitting in the unlicensed 2.5 Ghz spectrum at speeds up to 10 Mbs, which is many times faster than the old T1. Now in use in many offices, Wi-Fi displaces costlier (and messier) wired set-ups, and has spread to home-use. Most PCs manufactured after 2004 accomodate Wi-Fi technology. Wi-Fi is currently offered by private enterprisers, both to individuals and in isolated areas in airports and in a growing number of municipalities in neighborhood blocks via small distribution boxes. These latter services are now up for grabs, so to speak, with local governments seeking the legal right to provide Wi-Fi services via municipal franchises. Some states like Florida and Pennsylvania have begun lobbying for laws to prohibit broadband offerings by government agencies. Wi-Fi seems to be the wave of the future as the technology improves, but look for further improvements in range and performance. Care should be exercised in using your PC via public Wi-Fi connections as your use can be intercepted by third parties. The Bluetooth Protocol enables computers, cellphones and other devices to exchange data wirelessly at physical distances up to 10 meters (some say at greater distances). Called auto-initiation, this technology was created by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba. Washington is now involved in talks concerning the possible expansion of fast web connections to rural areas, using a combination of wireless and wired protocols, including but not limited to Wi-Fi, fiber-optics, Wi-Max relay towers, DSL or Digital Subscriber Lines, Hybrid Fiber Coax, and Broadband over Electric Power lines. Caution should be exercised in using all public transmission facilities. Of the wired variety of networks, Ethernet is still the fastest system available, but difficult and expensive to disperse nationwide. (See the latest story on increased USB speeds via USB 3.0, soon to come)

About e-Lynks and other Delapress domains:

e-Lynks is one of several interrelated websites under development by Delapress, Inc., an Arkansas corporation. First begun in 1990, e-Lynks continues to evolve as an efficient means of locating alphabeticallly categorized websites on the world wide web. Our primary goal is to list decent and desirable websites based on criteria established by some of the more responsible Internet Service Providers and their trade associations. These URLs are assigned to an appropriate alphabetized keyword category, an on-going process based largely on user input. All of our alphabetized e-Lynks listings are accessible from each of the individual pages. A second domain - INDXR.com - was addded in 2006, combining the categorized e-Lynks listings with the more popular sites in these categories as determined by frequent GOOGLE searches. Google is neither affiliated with the authors of this page nor responsible for its content. A third domain - INDXR.com - has been established as a means of directing traffic to e-Lynks, and to Google, and other helpful directories and search engines. Additional domains, including SafetoSee.com and 4UAlone.com are reserved for later development to meet anticipated needs. We are determined to make e-Lynks, INDXR, and our other directories the best portals to the best websites on the Internet WITHOUT pop-up banner ads, commercial alliances or promotional gimmicks. Until these sites are fully developed, we shall remain graphics and ad-free and, for the time-being, we shall offer e-Lynks as a public service to Internet users who need a fast-loading, clutter-free portal to some of the best websites on the Internet. At some future date, and when appropriate, this package of Internet domains may be licensed to Internet companies who may then provide these directories as a public service to their clients and users, in which cases limited commercialization may be sanctioned.

According to prognosticators at PC magazine, PC users can look forward to Super USB performance via USB 3.0, including simultaneous high-speed data transfer in BOTH directions. Present-day USB 2.0 plugs and cables are capable of one-direction transfer only or half-duplex transfer rates. USB 3.0 jacks will accept 1.0 and 2.0 plug ends for backward compatibility, but the new USB 3.0 cables will be able to work only with 3.0 jacks. Presumably all post 3.0-configured PCs will have only a number of USB 3.0 ports and perhaps ethernet since other connections will most likely not be needed..

Among the more significant newsworthy announcements from PC mag are the following: "USB 3.0 is fast enough to allow uncompressed 1080p video (currently our highest-definition video format) at 60 frames per second," says Jeff Ravencraft, president and chairman of the USB-IF. This would enable a camcorder to forgo video compression hardware and patent licensing fees for MPEG-4. The user could either stream video live from a simple camcorder (with no video processing required) or store it on an internal drive for later rapid transfer; neither of these methods is feasible today without heavy compression. Citing 3.0's versatility, some analysts see the standard as a possible complement--or even alternative--to the consumer HDMI connection found on today's Blu-ray players, according to PC mag.

Faster flash memory drives are also on the way. Whereas USB 2.0 is capable of charging rates of 100 mA per port, the maximum for USB 3.0 will move upward to 900 mA, thus increasing data transfer rates and lowering system back-up time considerably. For the full PC story, check in with PC magazine, or click here.
